Web Project-Athma Journey Web Design, HTML, Java Script Personal Undertaking On-going Athma Journey |
Background:
"Computers and Problem Solving" course in high school formerly introduced me to the web design. Naturally, I wanted a forum where I can express my ideas, opinions, and works. However, I did not want the web page to be exhibinistic, and wanted more focus on the content. The web page became an organizational device and a mirror upon which to reflect my life. The project evolved and still evolves in many unexpected directions.
Web Design:
First, I explicitly defined the purpose for my web page. As stated in the objective, the web page is to serve the following four main purposes: to act as an interface or a reference for potential employers,
to be a platform for my writings and projects, to aid in learning internet technologies and to aid in networking with my colleges.
Next, I studied various elements involved in the web design. Although the web design was relatively new area of endeavor, the processes involved in creating a good web page has evolved into a filed of study and profession. The web page creation involves the following steps:
In addition to English web pages, I also wanted to include certain Tamil web pages. There are three methods to include other language in the web pages: include as pictures, install fonts (the user needs to download that particular font), and use the new unicode standard.
As stated before, I wanted to focus more on the content of the web pages. Thus, I decided to review certain course materials and write tutorials for my self and others. The tutorials are written in a dialogue format, because I find dialogue format allows me to address various tangents or questions that arise during the study, and at the same time require a precious or defined answer. Two difficulties of including tutorials in the web page are the difficulty in including mathematical formulas, and drawing graphics. After learning Xfig I am able to draw graphics with relative ease, but including mathematical formulas is still a daunting task.
Project Status:
I document the development of the web project. I periodically evaluate the development by producing a project "Status Report", and review and set the project "Agenda". The project is on-going, and the result is the current web site that you are browsing.
